Scarlett Johansson stopped SodaStream from Palestine

intifada-palestine

Scarlett Johansson has stepped down as an Ambassador for Oxfam because of her relationship with SodaStream, a company which operates in the illegal settlement Ma’ale Adumim, in the Occupied West Bank. Scarlett Johansson and Oxfam faced immense pressure from the Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign who demanded that cut her ties with SodaStream or Oxfam cut their ties with Scarlett Johansson.

Scarlett Johansson described Oxfam’s opposition to her support for a company which operates in an illegal settlement as ‘a fundamental difference of opinion’. Oxfam described Scarlett’s role for SodaStream was ‘incompatible‘ with her work for Oxfam. Settlements are illegal under international law, and an obstacle to peace – therefore settlement production relies on, and supports, an activity that is illegal.

Director of Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Sarah Colborne, said: ‘Scarlett Johansson’s decision to represent SodaStream clearly violated Oxfam’s policy of supporting human rights and justice. By choosing to represent a company that operates in an illegal settlement on stolen Palestinian land, she has already suffered major reputational damage. And by prioritising SodaStream over Oxfam, she has decided to profit from occupation, rather than challenge global poverty. We thank all our supporters who made it clear to Oxfam that they needed to break from Scarlett Johansson or risk facing a haemorrhaging of support in the UK and internationally.

Italian composer Riz Ortolani dead at 87

Ortolani_piano

Rome – Italian soundtrack composer Riz Ortolani, who won a Grammy for his “Mondo Cane” theme “More,” and whose wide range of music for movies was featured in threeQuentin Tarantino films and on the Dino Risi-directed classic “The Easy Life” (Il Sorpasso), among dozens of other titles, died in Rome on January 23.

He was 87. The cause was reportedly due to complications from bronchitis.

Born on March 25, 1926, as Riziero Ortolani, in Pesaro, Italy, the prolific composer started his career in his early twenties working as a musical arranger for the orchestra of Italian pubcaster Rai, before forming his own orchestra. During the 1950s he and his Riz Ortolani orchestra wound up in Los Angeles and  worked at famed night club Ciro’s on the Sunset Strip.

Ortolani’s career in movie soundtracks started in 1962 with Gualtiero Jacopetti’s seminal creepy exploitation docu “Mondo Cane,” which screened at Cannes.

Melt! Festival First out 2014

brodinski

First Out 2014

Portishead, Röyksopp & Robyn (Do It Again 2014), Moderat, Fritz Kalkbrenner, Haim, Metronomy and many more confirmed.

Preparations for this year’s Melt! Festival, which takes place from 18th to 20th July in Ferropolis, are well underway. But before we will reveal the first 40+ acts, we want to say thank you to all of you who helped us win the »Best Medium-Sized Festival« award in the Festival Awards Europe. Your votes were very much appreciated. So now for some exciting news for all of you who have been eagerly awaiting our first line-up announcement as we can reveal the first names to play beneath the impressive coal-mining diggers in the ›City of Iron‹.

We’re thrilled to confirm that Portishead will be honouring us with an exclusive performance under the Ferropolis night sky this year. Since the mid-90s, the legendary Bristolian three-piece has been shaping the musical landscape, capturing the zeitgeist with the distinguished sound of its debut »Dummy« and the self-titled sophomore album. In 2008, Portishead returned with »Third« and an exciting avant-garde approach, once more challenging the boundaries of contemporary music.

Once again, Röyksopp and Robyn joined forces and went back into the studio together. Merging the best of both worlds, Röyksopp & Robyn Do It Again 2014 will fortunately make its Germany exclusive stopover at Melt! this year. An energetic blast of Scandinavian electro pop is coming our way.

Last year, only a few weeks before the release of their second album, »Moderat II«, Moderat got behind the decks at our Melt!Selektor Stage. After having almost completely sold out their upcoming tour, you’ll get another chance to see them live in Ferropolis this summer. We’re also delighted to welcome Fritz Kalkbrenner back to the fold, one of the Melt! enthusiasts since day one. Dragging glittery 80s pop into the 21stcentury, Haim will be travelling all the way from sunny LA to the Melt! peninsula. Arriving from the UK, Metronomy will be presenting their fourth album, »Love Letters«. The Melt!Selektor Stage as well as residentEllen Allien and her Bpitch crew will join us once more while the directional house imprint, Innvervisions, will celebrate its first special with label bosses Âme (DJ-Set) and Dixon plus Mano Le Tough, Marcus Worgull, Recondite (live), Kim Ann Foxman (DJ-Set) and more.

Tickets to this year’s Melt! Festival, tickets to our pre-party with Bonaparteas well as many other accommodation specials are available under www.meltfestival.de/tickets.

What we have here is roughly a third of our line-up so far. So keep checking back on our website, further acts will be announced soon!

Slayer, with special guests Suicidal Tendencies and Exodus, to hit the road

SLAYER, WITH SPECIAL GUESTS SUICIDAL TENDENCIES AND EXODUS,
TO HIT THE ROAD
Trek Will Culminate with Sets at the
2014 “Rock On The Range” in Columbus, OH

LOS ANGELES, CA – TUESDAY, January 21, 2014 — Slayer will take a break from writing and recording their next album to hit the road on May 9 for a handful of dates intended to pummel devotees with a night of moshing and frenetic thrash-punk-metal. Joining Slayer as Special Guests for these shows are Suicidal Tendencies and Exodus, marking the first time Slayer and Suicidal have toured together since the 1990 European “Clash of the Titans” tour. Gary Holt, who continues to fill in for Slayer’s fallen guitarist Jeff Hanneman, will do double-duty as guitarist in his primary band, Exodus.

Tickets for Slayer/Suicidal/Exodus go on sale this Friday, January 24 – log onto www.slayer.net for ticketing information.

“Can’t wait for this week of shows to happen,” said Slayer’s Kerry King. “LOVE Suicidal, and havent played with them in over 20 years! Everyone knows I’m a huge Exodus fan also. I guarantee you I will be watching every show from the stage! Going to be awesome!!!”

“It’s been 24 years since Suicidal Tendencies played with Slayer,” added Suicidal Tendencies’ Mike Muir, “so it’s long overdue that we finally play some shows in the States together. I have lots of great memories from that tour, and know that there will be a lot more after these shows, for the band and the people. Can’t wait!”

Gary Holt states, ” I am very excited to announce Exodus will be joining Suicidal Tendencies and the mighty Slayer in May for a short trip ending at the Rock on the Range! Double duty will have never been so much fun! Looking forward to this one in a big way! Let the mayhem begin!”

The dates will culminate for all three bands at the May 17 “Rock on The Range” rock festival in Columbus, OH, where they will share the stage with artists including Guns N’ Roses, Avenged Sevenfold, and Kid Rock.

Confirmed dates are as follows:

MAY

10 Fillmore, Denver, CO
11 Shrine, Billings, MT
13 Uptown Theatre, Kansas City, MO
15 The Pageant, St Louis, MO
16 Eagles Ballroom, Milwaukee, WI
17 Rock on the Range, Columbus, OH

ABOUT SLAYER:
The Chicago Tribune’s Greg Kot wrote that the five-time-nominated, two-time Grammy winning Slayer is “one of the great American rock bands of the last 30 years, forget about genre.” Their membership in “The Big Four” – Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax – the four bands that defined the thrash/metal genre – secures their place in music history. Indeed, few bands come close to matching the intensity that Slayer brings to its live shows, having been named “Best Live Band” by numerous media outlets including Revolver, SPIN, and Metal Hammer. With songs that mirror the turmoil and aberrations of our society – God’s terrifying global genocide, the chaos of our broken political system, chemical warfare, the hideous minds of serial killers, and the way-too-close proximity of world horrors that technology has brought us, Slayer remains crushing and brutal, steadfastly refusing to cater to the Mainstream. Slayer’s founding member, guitarist Jeff Hanneman passed in 2012, and Exodus guitarist Gary Holt has been filling in since.

ABOUT SUICIDAL TENDENCIES:
In 1982, before Suicidal Tendencies had ever released any music, readers of the legendary Flipside fanzine voted ST “Worst band and Biggest Assholes.” When ST released its self titled album a year later, they took out a full page ad thanking everyone that voted for them and in bold letters said, “You’ll be sorry!”
The next year Flipside put ST on the cover with the print, “Love them or hate them, they are not going away,” after readers voted them “Best Band, Best new Band and Best record.”
Over the years, many controversies have surrounded the band, including being banned from playing their hometown of LA, and Tipper Gore from the PMRC trying attack the band.
To this day, whether it’s a skater, punk, metalhead, thrasher, alternative, crossover, you’ll see the ST flip hats and shirts all around the world with ST festivals as far away as Indonesia and South Korea, and touring many major festivals in Europe, South America and Asia.
Thirty years later, after several gold records and Grammy nominations, and world wide touring, ST is still loved and hated….and they don’t give a fuck.
As lead singer Mike Muir said, “We’re not hear to play what you like, we’re hear to play what we like, hopefully you’ll like it as much as we do, but Suicidal is not for everyone, so if you don’t, we ain’t losing any sleep over it.”
Now in 2014, Suicidal is still not going way, as the classic ST song say, “You can’t bring me down”!

ABOUT EXODUS:
When it comes to thrash metal, Bay Area thrashers EXODUS epitomize, define, raise the bar and have the genre on lockdown. EXODUS are one of the true forefathers of thrash, hailing an illustrious career spanning 34 years. Their 1984 breakout debut, Bonded By Blood, is a stonewall genre classic featuring cranium-crunching standards such as ‘”A Lesson In Violence”, “Strike Of The Beast” and more. Formed in 1980 with original members Kirk Hammett (guitar), Tim Agnello (guitar), Tom Hunting (drums), Carlton Melson (bass), the line-up has evolved through numerous changes before coming to their current status. EXODUS are Gary Holt (guitar), Lee Altus (guitar), Tom Hunting (drums), Jack Gibson (bass), and Rob Dukes (vocals). To date, EXODUS has released ten studio albums, two live albums and one compilation, including their most recent release of 2010’sExhibit B: The Human Condition via Nuclear Blast Records. EXODUS recently broke ground on their brand of blistering new material, set for tentative release later in 2014. EXODUS has sold over 5 Million albums worldwide.
